# How To Measure Poles

## Instructions on measuring round poles:

**Identify the Round Pole**:- Locate the round pole you wish to measure.

**Choose the Measurement Tool**:- For small to medium poles, a flexible measuring tape works best.
- For larger poles or if a measuring tape is unavailable, a piece of string can be used.

**Position the Measuring Tape or String**:- For a measuring tape: (see diagram)
- Wrap the measuring tape around the widest part of the pole.
- Ensure the measuring tape is level and snug but not too tight around the pole.

- For a string:
- Wrap the string around the widest part of the pole.
- Make sure the string is level and snug but not too tight.

- For a measuring tape: (see diagram)

**Mark the Measurement**:- If using a measuring tape:
- Note the point on the tape where it completes the circle around the pole and overlaps with the starting point. This is the circumference.

- If using a string:
- Mark the point where the string overlaps with the starting point.
- Lay the string flat and use a ruler to measure the length from the starting point to the marked point. This length is the circumference.

- If using a measuring tape:
**Double-Check the Measurement**:- It’s good practice to measure the circumference a couple of times to ensure accuracy.

### Tips:

- Ensure the measuring tape or string is not twisted or slack while taking the measurement.
- For accuracy, measure the circumference at multiple points if the pole is not perfectly round, and take the average of those measurements.
- If using a string, ensure it is not elastic as stretching can affect the accuracy of the measurement.
- Clean the pole surface if necessary to avoid any obstructions that might affect the measurement.

By following these steps, you can accurately measure the circumference of any round pole.

## Instructions for measuring square poles:

**Identify the Square Pole**:- Locate the square pole you wish to measure.

**Choose the Measurement Tool**:- Use a measuring tape or a ruler.

**Position the Measuring Tape or Ruler**:- Place the measuring tape or ruler across one of the sides of the square pole. (see diagram)
- Ensure that the measuring tape or ruler is aligned straight and perpendicular to the edges of the pole.

**Take the Measurement**:- Read the measurement from the starting point to the end point of the side you are measuring.
- This measurement is the length of one side of the square pole.

**Double-Check the Measurement**:- To ensure accuracy, measure the same side a couple of times.
- Measure at different points along the pole to confirm that all sides are equal and the pole is indeed square.

**Use a Level (Optional)**:- If you have a level, you can place it along the edge of the pole to ensure that your measurement is perfectly straight and level.

### Tips:

- Ensure the measuring tape or ruler is straight and not at an angle when taking the measurement.
- Double-check measurements at multiple points to ensure the pole is consistently square.
- If the pole is very large, you might need a longer measuring tape for accuracy.
- Clean the surface of the pole if necessary to avoid any obstructions that might affect the measurement.

By following these steps, you can accurately measure the side of any square pole.
